Jazzrock is a category that is way too narrow to define what you can find in here. Here are tunes inspired by the great writers of jazzrock, fusion and the jazzier side of pop music. Inspiration sources are Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour and many many more. Every tempo from slow ballands to fast and funkier can be found here!

Song name:

Anton's New Snare

Backing track: Backing track
Instruments:

Guitars: James Tyler SE HD recorded direct through a Boss GS-10 with a Blackstar for overdrive and a the boost of T-Rex Møller for added warmth.
Bass: Sandberg recorded direct through a T-Rex Squeezer for punch, warmth and definition.

Drums: Native Instruments Abbey Roads Modern Drums
Recorded with: Cubase 6
Comments:

I had just been to Buller & Bång, the best drum store in Sweden, with my drum playing son to check out some cymbals. Anton, who works there, showed us his new snare drum. When he played it it sounded great and Anton sure can play. His playing inspired me to write this tune. Unfortunately my drum programming skills doesn't come anywhere close in swing and feel to what Anton does. Influences for my playing probably came from listening a lot lately to Andy Most and Wayne Kranzt. I do realize I have a loooong way to go. :-)

15 Years Later

Bass: Native Instruments Pro-53 and Kontakt

Comments:

Had just decided to go to Los Angeles to visit friends I hadn't seem for 15 years and was in a happy mood. This tune is all about what I like about Los Angeles as it was musically was I visited a lot. Smooth jazz rock was big and Michael McDonald and Larry Carlton was two of my main inspirations. You can probably trace that very clearly in this tune.
Those interested in guitar sounds may notice that the lead guitar was recorded direct using nothing but the Boss GS-10. A very dynamic and playable sound.

Just wanted to write a slick shuffle working with a three single coil guitar. I found this groove in Groove Agent and took it from there. This tune is very influenced by Donald Fagen and some more smoother tunesmiths.

Yamaha Pacifica 612v recorded direct through a Boss GS-10 using Carl Martin Compressor, Chorus and Plexi pedals
Native Instruments Kontakt using Wizoo Stingray samples for bass

Drums: Native Instruments Battery 3

I had the opportunity to try out a few pedals from Carl Martin and these pedals inspired me to write this tune. The clean sounds used the compressor and sometimes the chorus. The overdrive sounds used the different Plexi channels.

Once I was fortunate to have a boss that really enjoyed the work I did and was very much into professional development. Thus we spent many meetings in agreement on how the work should develop and how I should develop with it. After one such meeting I got the inspiration for this tune.

Song name:

500 Reasons

Backing track: Backing track
Instruments:

Yamaha SA500 recorded direct through a Boss GS-10 using a T-Rex Mudhoney for overdrive
Native Instruments Kontakt using Wizoo Stingray samples for bass
HALion for the Rhodes
Native Instruments B4 II for organ

Drums: Native Instruments Battery 2
Recorded with: Cubase 4
Comments:

I was fooling around with my T-Rex Mudhoney that gave me a sound that was dynamic and not at all the kinds of sounds my friend's were using their Mudhoneys for. I got the feeling that this sound could be very useful for a 80's style tune in a style that to me is between Larry Carton and Lee Ritenour. You may of course not agree. :-) I recorded it, posted it at TGP and mailed T-Rex saying it was there if they wanted to listen. They surprised me by asking if they could post at their site. I'm very proud of the fact that they still use it on thier Mudhoney page.

Song name:

Fat Tuesday

Backing track: Backing track
Instruments:

Yamaha SA500 recorded direct through a Boss GS-10, no pedals
Native Instruments Kontakt using Wizoo Stingray samples for bass
HALion for the Rhodes
Native Instruments B4 II for organ

Drums: Native Instruments Battery 2
Recorded with: Cubase
Comments:

I got the idea for this when playing my inexpensive but good semiacoustic Yamaha SA500 and trying to get my Boss GS-10 to sound like a Fuchs ODS amp which in its turn get its inspiration from the Dumble Overdrive Special amp. I do realize that this sound is far from either a Fuchs or a Dumble but it works for this tune. It's actually the same amp model all through the song. First with gain set low for clean. The first melody is with gain at 102 and later I kicked in the GS-10 boost effect. To me at the time of writing, there is no other digital hardware that is as dynamic as the Boss GS-10.

Song name:

Almost There

Backing track: Backing track
Instruments:

Edwards SA-118 (335 clone) recorded direct through a Boss GS-10
Steinberg Model-E for bass
HALion for the Rhodes
Native Instruments Pro-53 and FM7 for the pads

Drums: Native Instruments Battery 2
Recorded with: Cubase
Comments:

I wrote this backing track after having heard a guitarist on the net playing his Fuschs amp highlighting the dynamic aspect of that amp. I wanted a track that would allow that kind of playing so this is the result. The ideal amp for this track would be a Fuschs ODS, Two Rock Sig, Bruno Super 100 or a Dumble. I don't have an amp like that but I got my Boss GS-10 and that worked OK. My choice of guitar would be a 335-style guitar. Anything goes as long as the dynamics are there.

Instruments:

Gibson ES-335 recorded direct through a Boss GS-10
NI Kontakt 2 playing a Wizoo Music Man bass
Steinberg The Grand

I wanted to play some clean octaves like George Benson but with a more old style soul backing so I wrote this one.

Backing track: Backing track
Instruments:

PRS McCarty recorded direct through a Boss GS-10
NI Kontakt 2 playing a Wizoo Music Man bass
Steinberg HALion

Drums: Native Instruments Battery 2
Recorded with: Cubase
Comments:

This tune is probably a mix of all my influences from the mid 80's and 10 years on. I have as much enjoyment from this tune when playing with a clean sound like George Benson and Pat Metheny as I have with an overdrive sound like Larry Cartlon or Robben Ford.

I wrote this tune as a challenge to myself. I wanted to write as fairly complex and dynamic piece where I could go a bit wild harmonically.

This tune started out as a vehicle for me to learn to play some organ. In this case the Native Instruments B4 II plug-in. Then I realized it could be a lot of fun for guitar as well.

In my opinion Donald Fagen is one of the greatest jazz-pop-rock song writers and thus it's not surprising that I take a lot of inspiration from him. In this tune it's quite obvious. Thank you Mr Fagen!

Comments:

This tune is from somewhere between California and Brazil. A fast latin style jazzfusion very much inspired by Lee Ritenour and Russ Freeman (The Rippingtons). Why not try a nylon string for a change? Excellent fun.

A somewhat more harmonically advanced track where you can practice playing those outside lines you hear from John Scofield and Scott Lerner. This tune allows you to venture out on new tonal territory.

Suhr Classic recorded direct through a Boss GS-10
Native Instrument FM-7, Elektrik Piano, Pro-53, Absynth

Drums: Native Instruments Battery 2

Comments:

This tune takes its inspiration from a live track with Gino Vanelli and then I added my own twist to it. It's a fast moving track with steady 8ths in the bass so in my mind fluid lines are specially suited for this track.

Comments:

I wrote this tune because I wanted something smooth that I could play with my chorus. I got the idea for the title from a Gothenburg based guitarist Lasse (Crybaby) who told me he thought listening to this type of music was as exciting as chewing wet cotton.

Comments:

This tune was written so I could have something to practice the licks I want to play with a Dumble-style dynamic overdrive. When the tune was done I realized that once again I had taken a chapter out of the Steely Dan book. You can't escape your past!
